What kind of wave of violence will this trigger? I can only hope it is mild. In many countries of this world, today would be a national day of celebration. This seems to me as though it may just give the terrosists another reason to continue doing what they do....

Back In The Saddle

A few weeks ago Leigh casually mentioned that she thought I should get back into home brewing. So for the last couple of weeks I have been thinking about it. So yesterday I mentioned to her that I liked her idea and wanted to go to Winooski to the Vermont Homebrew Supply and get a beer kit and get started. Merry Christmas to me!!
I picked up two different recipes and the ingredients to brew them. I am starting off with tow India Pale Ales. One is called Expedition's Reward that is a custom blend from the store and the other I got from one of several recipe books they keep on a table with some other literature. They have different grains and a different beginning hop. I am sure I will be calling Gary frequently to ask him questions as I start brewing my own beer again.
I brewed up the Expedition's Reward as soon as we got home yesterday afternoon. All seemed to go well. The wort is now upstairs bubbling away.

Vacation

On Friday Leigh and I will be headed back to Italy. This will be our third trip to Italy. It is a big world and there are lots of places to go see but we really enjoy the country of Italy. We have had great times there and plan to do so again this trip. We arrive in Rome at 8:30 local time. We pick up our rental car at the airport and then head for our villa in the Tuscany region. We are staying near San Gimignano. Our plan is to visit a different hill town each day. One of the towns I am looking forward to visiting is Montepulciano. We went to this town last time we were in Italy and had a great time. They have some of the best wine in the region. I really like the Vino Nobile. It is a red made with sangiovese variety. Our plan is to ship home a couple of cases of wine from this town. We will be in Tuscany for one week. We will then drive to Venice and drop off the rental car. We are staying in Venice for only a couple of nights. From there we are taking the train to Rome where we have rented a top floor apartment. One of the highlights of this apartment is the terrace. It has great views of the city. Last time we were in Rome we also rented an apartment. We were on the top floor that time also. We found that we spent most of our time while we were at the apartment on the terrace. The only time we were inside the apartment was when we were sleeping or cooking our meals. One huge advantage of the apartment is that you get to have your own space. Plus we could cook as many meals as we wanted to. Last time we only went out for dinner twice in the week we were in Rome. It will probably be a similiar story this time. I will post pictures when we get back on July 10th. We are quite excited for our vacation to Italy.

Today is it! The ceremony starts at 2:00 eastern time. I am very proud of my accomplishment. As happy and excited as I am about today, the best part was getting a job. Today would be a bit subdued if I had not yet gotten a full time job. Of course Leigh will be there cheering me on, as will Betty and Lynn. A few years ago I would never have thought I could accomplish this. I had friends around my age that had gone back to college and I always commended them and felt I could never do it. Well I proved myself wrong. I worked hard to get the good grades I got. Over the two years I got 9 A's, 6 B's and 2 C's. There were lots of sacrifices made these past two years and not just by me. Leigh has been a tremendous partner through all of this. (I bet Karen would say the same about Gary, as she just graduated yesterday. Congrats to them). All my family members have been very supportive. Leigh had more confidence in me at the start of this than I did. My hat is off to her.

One of the things I gave up was playing hockey three times a week. I cut it back to just playing Friday evening. We have a great time slot from 6-7:30. They are a great group of people I play with. One of the traditions we have with our Friday Night Hockey Club is to have a couple of cold adult beverages after we skate. It is an important part of the game. That way if you get a little perturbed with the way someone hacked you or tripped you can laugh it off after over a beer. Since I started school I haven't been staying to drink with everyone. Well I am happy to say that last night for the first time in about 2 years I stayed and had a beer with everyone.

I only have one down side to all of this. I am really sorry that my Dad is not here today to see me graduate. I think he would have been proud of me. Hopefully he is watching.

The Rewards

I found out on Monday that a company called Greenman-Pedersen, Inc. had offered me a job. I will be doing construction inspection. Most of the work I will be doing with be with the VT AOT out of St. Johnsbury. That is about a 75 minute drive. I will working all around the northern part of the state. I think the first project I will be working on will be a "Marking Project". That would be any of the lines that are on the roads. I am not really sure what I will need to do exactly as the construction inspector on these jobs but I am sure I will find out soon. Some of the other projects I will probably work on will be bridge inspection and paving inspection. This year I will only work through the construction season. Then I will get laid off for a few months. If I did a good job for GPI they will hire me back again in April. After that first year you can usually get year round work if you want to. The guy who hired me said there were many of the inspectors who like to have the winter off so can either go South or go skiing or some other winter activity. We will work enough overtime during the year to cover the down time. So if you budget your money properly you can get through the year. I am extremely excited to start my new job. Meanwhile the job I have had through this past school year with the State is still going on. My boss told me I could work until I started with GPI. So I have a couple more weeks with the State.

It was such a relief when the job offer came. Not very many of my classmates have gotten jobs. Summer jobs are even difficult to come by. Vermont Tech College prides itself on 98% placement of its graduates. This year they will not be even close to a number like that. Some of my classmates are going to continue their college educations either at VTC or some other 4 year college.

My graduation is Saturday May 16th in Northfield, VT. It will be held on the campus of Norwich University. I am not really sure why we don't have it on our own campus in Randolph Center. After all we did go to school in Randolph Center not Northfield.

I see from my brother Mike's blog that the word is out that I got some kind of an award from Vermont Tech College. It is true. I will write down what it says on the award. I thought the best part was the $100.00 check that I got with the award. Needless to say this went straight onto my resume.

Here it is:
"The Vermont Section of the American Society of Civil Engineers Award is presented to Jeffrey R. Warner to the graduating senior with the highest academic average and greatest all-around academic development in the Civil and Environmental engineering Technology program."

I am really happy to have gotten this award....hopefully it will help me to get a job.

I would never been able to get an award like this without the support of Leigh. Her encouragement and support over the past two years has been beyond words. She deserves this as much as I do.

The first semester of my final year is drawing to a close. It is very difficult for me to believe that we have had 13 weeks of classes. And many lab reports, homeworks, quizzes and tests later we are almost done. We have one week of classes and one week of final exams left. It has been a very difficult semester. We are in the midst of working on our final project in Surveying. It has been very disheartening. Several times we have had to go out and reshoot some of our shots as they were not as accurate as they needed to be. If the temperature were still in the 60s with no snow on the ground it would be no problem. But it is December. It is cold and there is snow on the ground. Don't get me wrong I really love surveying. I hope to do lots of it when I finish. But anytime you are working you like the conditions to be favorable. They aren't always and that is what we have been experiencing the past week or so. If I can post my project for you all to see when it is done I will. I'll ask one of my more computer savvy classmates to show me how. I am lucky as far as finals go. I only have scheduled each day. They run from Tuesday to Friday. I should be exempted from the Wednesday final in Hydraulics as my grade is high enough to not have to take the final. That is the only class where we can get exempted from the final. I am not sure that I will make Dean's List this semester. It will be close.
Once again Leigh has been wonderful during my schooling. I wouldn't have been able to this without her constant support. Thank you.

Eggs

Our hens are really starting to produce. This is from the last three days. The most, so far, in one day is 20 eggs from 28 hens. There are 25 new layers and 3 that we have had for a few years. The oldest hen we have is a gray banty. She is probably 5 years old. Leigh sells most of the eggs at school. I sell some to my classmates. Two fifty a dozen. Not a bad deal for fresh eggs.

Making Cider

Leigh and I pressed some of the apples we had picked a couple weeks ago. Leigh would cut the apples in half and put them in the hopper of the grinder. I then ground the apples up. Not very fine-actualsly quite chunky. The ground up apple fell into a cheesecloth type bag that was held by the round part of the press. That goes under the press and viola.....cider. Very delicious.

Frosty Morning

Leigh and I put together this little fall display. We thought it would be nice to see as we drove up the driveway each time.

Leo and Cully playing in the newly tilled garden behind the house. On the right you can see the broccoli is still going strong.

Leigh planted these two maples many years ago with the thought being they would be used to string up the hammock. We have a great hammock strung between those trees. It is a good place to relax on a sunny afternoon.

Another beautiful autumn day here in Vermont. The colors this fall have been great.

Apple Heaven

Leigh and I picked quite a few apples today. I moved the ladder around the tree and Leigh climbed up to pick some really nice apples from the upper branches. It took us just over an hour to pick those pictured here. We bought a fruit press on ebay the other day. Hopefully it will arrive soon so we can grind up these apples and have some cider.

We are still going to dry some more apples in the dehydrator. I tilled up the garden close by the house today. There is still some broccoli left in that garden. Next post I will show the tilled up garden. Sorry if it is snowing where you live today. Bright sunny warm day here in Vermont.

Big Apple

We have had a bumper crop of apples this year. Actually it has been a great fruit year all around our property. The only exception being the plums. Leigh did enjoy both plums we did get from that tree. This apple came from one of the trees in the front yard along the fenceline. You can see it is a very large apple. It weighed in at 12 ounces. We put our food dehydrator to work this weekend. It started out with the two trays of hot peppers, then one tray of tomatoes and then 3 trays of apple rings. The apples are now dried (About 2 ounces from each tray. It might not sound like a lot but it filled a quart bag.) and quite tasty. So tasty in fact that we did 8 more trays. They are in the drier now. Leigh also made applesauce. She has been drying herbs as well.

I am now in the middle of Week 3. So far no real quizzes or exams. They will start next week. We have been getting plenty of homework. Reading and "cyphering". I am so happy to not have Calculus this semester. I have four classes. All related to my major, Civil Engineering. This semester I have Surveying II, Statics and Strengths of Materials (hardest class of the program), Environmental Engineering, and Hydraulics and Drainage. I will be happy when graduation day comes around in May But for now I am putting my nose to the grindstone (sounds silly) and getting my work done.
I am very lucky to have such an understanding wife. Homework comes before almost any other chore I have to do.

Space Invaded

I wasn't really sure if I was going to tell everyone this or not. But I decided most of you would hear about it one way or another so I might as well tell you. Someone tried to break into our house while we were at work today. Fortunately they tried to come in through the window in our mud room. The window was open with screen in place. We don't lock our doors all the time. The door in the mudroom happened to be locked today. We hardly ever open the window in the mudroom but today Leigh opened it before she left. We decided it was good that whoever tried to break in only went to that window. It happened to be the room that Leo, the Old English Sheepdog, and Cully, the Borzoi hang out in during the day. Whoever it was did steal an antique crock of Leighs. It was just inside the window on the chest of drawers that is under the window. When I got home around 4:00 I noticed the screen in the window was cut. I didn't think too much about it as nothing else was out of place. Or so it seemed. It was only when Leigh got home a few minutes later that I realized the crock was missing. My first thought was that she had moved the crock earlier in the day. She said she had not touched the crock. We believe that the dogs scared off the would be intruder. The screen has some claw marks in it that were not there yesterday. So I called the State Police to let them know what had happened. They took down all the pertinent info. I mostly wanted to just let them know more than I wanted them to do something about what had happened. Leigh and I were just laughing about them coming here to take fingerprints. We decided we could have our own CSI-Moretown. We would dust the crime scene with flour and then use duct tape to get fingerprints. All the Police could offer was to advise us to keep the windows closed and our doors locked.
It was more than likely kids looking to get some cash. Too bad they came to our house. They should have just asked me...we got no cash.

Chickens Week 1

These are the chicks at 9 days. As you can see the meat birds, the all yellow ones, have grown much faster than the layers, the multi colored ones. As the layers get bigger I will take individual shots of each variety and tell you what they are. We got 8 different kinds of layers.

Calculus vs. Gardenboy

It is just about 8:00 here on the East Coast. I am sitting in the library doing my final preparations for my Calculus final that is from 3-6:00 this afternoon. My last bit of work for this, my second semester at VTC. As I go into this final my average is a 71. Not too great. If my average had been a 75 I would have been guaranteed a passing grade in this class. Now I need to score at least a 20% on my final. Oh you might think 20% should be no problem. I hope I am up to the task. I have put many hours into this class over the course of the semester. More than my other 4 classes combined. Okay maybe not but the proportion is close to that. To work so hard and to have so little to show for my effort is disheartening. I certainly will not be satisfied if I get a 20% on this exam. I don't want to get a D- in this class or any other class. I could still get a C+ if I do okay on this final. But right now all I really care about is passing the class. As some of my classmates are quick to point out "D is for diploma."

Last Day

Today is our last day of classes for the Spring semester. Many quizzes and tests have been taken and lab reports written over the past 14 weeks. Oh and too many little papers for English. I am so happy to be done with this semester. Now to get through my finals next week.

Hoping

I have my last calculus exam Wednesday morning at 8:00. Right now I have a 73.4 average in the class. If I score an 80 on this exam I will pass calculus no matter what I get on the final next week. Think good math type thoughts for me tomorrow morning. I will need them.

We are in our last week of classes. Finals are next week. I have 2 on Monday-Physics and Materials(concrete and asphalt), 1 Tuesday-CAD, and 1 Thursday- Calculus. Then I am done for the semester. I start my job with the Dept. of Environmental Conservation on May 19th. I may start the 14th. It depends on when my chicks are delivered. I have 25 layers and 25 meat birds coming my way.

Disappointed

Hmmm....quite a title to a blog. Am I disappointed we won't get to see UNH at the Frozen Four--this pales in comparison. Disappointed I got my butt kicked Friday by a Calculus exam---not even in the same league.

I am hoping that we get to see the North Dakota Fighting Sioux. And more specifically the North Dakota Cheerleaders. Now is when the disappointment starts. I have known this fact all season but have waited until now to talk about it. The cheerleaders no longer skate. You read that right---they no longer have to skate. I loved watching them skate around. Not only were they cheerleaders(hell I did that at UNH for the football team-another story another time) but they were SKATING cheerleaders. I read on their web page, of course I have it bookmarked, that they no longer have to be able to skate to be a hockey cheerleader. I hope The Fighting Sioux make the Frozen Four and even more I hope we are in the Dakota section for the games...

Go Cats Go!!!

There are not very many reasons that I would miss playing hockey myself. I play every Friday from 6-7:30. Great time to play, great group I play with. But tonight I had to reluctantly(maybe not) tell my teammates I would not be playing. I am staying home to watch the Wildcats take on the Eagles. This should be a very hard fought game. UNH has beaten BC three times this year. One has to wonder about the odds of the Wildcats being able to put BC away one more time. A win tonight will most likely give UNH a number one seed in the quarterfinals of the NCAAs. And very much deserved this year.
I really like the 'Cats chances tonight. So tonight at 5:00 I will be tuning NESN a.k.a. TV 38 from Boston to watch the Hockey East semifinals. The second game features BU vs UVM. tough one for me to pick. Who do I dislike less???? Kind of like voting for politicians. Guess I would have to pick BU. No matter who wins I hope they are playing against UNH for the championship tomorrow night.

So even though UNH plays BC tonight you can bet I will yell out on more than one occasion "LETS GO BLUE!!!!SCREW BU"

Memory

As I sit here, watching it snow on the first day of Spring, I am doing my calculus homework (quiz tomorrow), listening to Pandora. One of my stations is called "Big Band/Swing". So far the several songs I have heard take me back to Williams Circle and dinnertime. Remember how we used to listen to music most nights while we ate dinner? Well I am recognizing some of the songs as ones we used to hear. It also made me think about how we used to bring Dad's sweatshirt down to him when he got home from work. Off came the jacket and on went the sweatshirt. As I recall he didn't always take his tie off. I also remember his timing of arriving in the driveway as the food hit the table at 5:45.

I have survived my first round of exams. For some reason this semester my first round only had 2 exams. One in Calculus and another in Physics. I got an 87% on Calc and 100% on the physics one. Sounds good doesn't it? But hold on. Let us take a look at calculus quizzes so far. These are out of ten. 6, 4.5. and 6. Ouch not so good.
Physics has been better. Once again out of ten. 8,8, and 9. Physics labs, also out of ten have been okay too. 9,8,and 8. In Materials so far we have had 3 homeworks-all of those have been a check plus. He only offers three grades on homework check plus or 100, check or 90 and check minus or 80. He just doesn't go any lower than an 80 on homework. Turn in a paper with just your name and the homework questions and no answers will get you a check minus, but that is still worth an 80. We have handed in three labs so far that I received a 5.4/6.0 or a 90% on those. My English class has been good too. He grades on a five scale. we have turned in five assignments so far. All fives. The CAD class has had three grades so far. Based on ten I have gotten 9,9.5 and 10.

We are now in the 5th week of this semester. That means we have next week off. The week we go back I have 3 exams. So my vacation time will be spent getting ready for those three exams.

I am very worried about the Calculus class. It is very hard. I do understand the concepts but keep making foolish errors on my quizzes. Hopefully I will stop doing that.

Semester Two at Vermont Tech

I just wanted to let everyone know what classes I am taking this semester.
In no particular order of importance they are:
Physics
Calculus
CAD part II
English-Technical Writing
Materials (deals with concrete and asphalt)

Lots of work this semester. One more class than last. I have 18 credits this time. I won't have to take 5 classes again during a semester thankfully. My schedule is better than last semester in that I have only one day that I am on campus from 8-6. I still have my job at the hardware/feed store on Wednesday afternoons and weekends. I set up tutors for myself in Calculus and Physics. I really like having tutors especially the way it works at VTC. If you sign up early enough (of course I did!!) you can get a 1:1 tutor. Plus there is no charge for this service. There is lots of drop in tutoring but none of that is 1:1. This school seems to go out of its way to help us succeed. I hope I can do as well as I did first semester. I have put a fair amount of pressure on myself to do well. I really like to get A's.

I think that Johnny the Bobblehead is planning to attend some of my classes with me this semester. He claims he wants to learn some more, but I think he just wants to check out the co-eds.

I see that Sidney Crosby of the Pittsburgh Penguins had a Gordie Howe Hat Trick last night against the Boston Bruins. For those who don't know- a Gordie Howe Hat Trick is a goal, an assist and a fight in one game. He did that and better. The Pens won the game in OT after blowing a 4 goal lead. I am always happy to see Ex UNH players do well. Ty Conklin was in net for the Pens having just been recalled from Wilkes-Barre.

My grades were all posted this morning for my first semester. They are as follows:
Tech Math: A
Surveying:B+
Computer Apps(CAD): A-
Chemistry:B

That all equals out to a 3.53. As I said to Leigh this morning I haven't gotten all those grades on one report card since high school. So for the moment I am enjoying the feeling of being on the Dean's List. Now I just need to keep it up for 3 more semesters.

Thursday

Today is my last final. I was supposed to have my last final on Friday but our professor is offering it today as well. I did well enough in my math class to be exempt. Did I already write that in my last blog? Can't remember. Anyway I had an average of 90.2 in Tech math so I don't have to take the final. I am quite happy to get an A- in that class. It is worth 5 credit hours so it is big in the GPA. I am now in the library reviewing for my chem test. It has been a good semester. The workload for each class was at times overwhelming, but overall I kept up with all my homework and class assignments. I will let you all know the rest of my grades as I get them.
Tonight when I get home I will be opening the bottle of champagne I have been saving.

Finals Week

Hello to all my family and friends still out there. Been a very busy semester. I have finals this week. I hope to be able to write something about my semester once it is over. Two finals on Tuesday, one Wednesday and one Friday. Hopefully I did well enough on my last Tech Math exam that I will be exempt from the final. Otherwise that exam is on Thursday. My last exam of the week is in Chemistry. See you on the other side of my semester.

I am always happy to see the Wildcats win hockey games. But there is just something extra that I feel when they beat BU. They beat them last night 4-1 in BU's back yard. It was also Coach Umile's 400th college win. For those who don't know Jack Parker is the coach of BU. He is also a tremendous coach with a boatload of class. He had the PA announcer at the game announce that it was Umile's 400th win. Not something every home team coach would think to do for the opposing team.
Back in my UNH days our group used to sit right behind the opposing team's bench. We were very vocal and at times obnoxious. I am reminded of one of our favorite cheers.
"Lets go Blue....Screw BU!" In fact we liked that cheer so much we didn't just chant that when BU was in town. We used to pull that one out all the time. Didn't matter who the Cats were playing.

So GO CATS GO!!!

World Series Winner

I have finally figured out who will win the World Series. I can't believe I didn't realize this before. Must be that I have been too busy at school to take the time to see this obvious fact. For those of you who didn't know I have had this whole week off from school. But that might be another blog another time. Back to my prediction. It is really quite simple once you look at where the next Frozen Four is going to be. Last year we went to St. Louis. Cardinals won the World Series. Hmmmmmm. I am going to predict that the Rockies will win it all based on this very scientific study I have just finished. Actually this thought came to me a couple of days ago but I had to do extensive research to prove my hypothesis.

Autumn in Vermont

I took some pictures around the house the other day to share with everyone.

It was a good winter squash year.

We only got 3 pumpkins from our five plants. I only let one pumpkin grow per plant hoping to get giant pumpkins. They were slow germinating which led to us getting only BIG pumpkins as opposed to giant ones.

These shots were looking down the driveway towards the out front veggie garden. Corn, onions, potatoes, squashes, kale, beans, leeks, and sunflowers grew in this garden.

We are rapidly approaching "peak foliage" in our part of the world. The highways and byways and even the little dirt roads are crowded with leaf peepers taking in the beauty of the change of seasons.

Putting the "Civil" in Civil Engineering

Our freshman class of civil engineers went on an outing today. (You might want to check out Johhny the Bobblehead's blog.) There were about 18 of us that went. It was a lab for one of our courses. Called Freshman Orientation for Civil Engineers. We went to Montague CG in Randolph VT. Our professor feels it is important for us to learn and understand golf as it is a very important part of doing business. Plus he wanted us to learn how to be civil on the golf course.

Very nice course. I hadn't been golfing in several years so it was fun to get back out and hit a few slices, a couple of trees and the green actually. We had a shotgun start and played best ball. Our team scored about 42 I think. I wasn't the scorekeeper. I just provided the entertainment for my teammates. Fortunately for several of us our math class had been cancelled for today. Maybe even more fortunate for our math professor!!! She might not have thought it was very civil of us to come to class after consuming several carbonated malt beverages.

The RIP is not for the past memeber of the Jackson Five but instead someone much more important. He WAS the BEER HUNTER. He knew everything there was to be known about beer. As he lay on his deathbed his parting words were something about one regret that he never had the chance to taste the beermaker's homebrews. And with that he passed.

I have now been to four days of classes. So far so good. But then again we have only had one quiz. I did manage to get 100 on my very first quiz of this semester. Hope I can keep up some semblence to that. I have a new desktop computer now from Dell. It is the inspiron 1520. Very nice but I have not been a pc guy ever. I am having some trouble getting used to the differences. Right click....what the f is that all about? I know I will get used to this beast and learn to love it but right now it is very foreign to me. Sorry that I am not putting out very many blogs for all you allt for me.(that would be southern talk) to read but I won't be able to do much about that.

The homework is already being piled up but so far I am wading through it. Lots of reading to do also. Damn my brain isn't used to this much thinking. But I do like it. I am really glad I decided to do this. There will be days (daze?) when I might question my sanity about this going to college thing but I know I will be rewarded in the end. Plus the support I am getting from Leigh is great. She was a grad student several years ago so she knows what is happening to me. One of the things I don't like about being away from home all day is that many of my jobs at home are now turning in Leigh's jobs. She has to work all day too so I feel a little bit bad when she does my chores. I am also working about 15 hours a week too. Mind you none of this is whining or complaing just merely stating facts. I am very lucky to have a wife who is so supportive of my new goals in life.

I hope everyone is doing great. Keep on blogging so I can keep up with all you are doing.

On a side note now. Hey Man Computer World aka Mikey get it together dude. How about a few posts?

Chilly Start

I noticed when I went outside this morning that there was a bit more of a chill than we have had since probably last May. As I walked to the barn to feed the horses and chickens I noticed that there was frost on the windrows from where I had been mowing with the tractor yesterday. WhenI got back to the house I looked at the thermometer and sure enough---36 degrees. What the frost is up with that? I heard no warnings that it might get cold last night. I suppose the real test of how cold it was last night is to look at the basil. And it is fine. So we had very scattered frost last night. We have only just gotten our first few red tomatoes. It can't frost yet. Just had corn last night. Still needed a few more days on the stalk but I was getting impatient.

Yesterday we did some harvesting in the bean and broccoli rows. Leigh froze about 12 quarts of yellow beans and I froze 10 quarts of broccoli. We now have over 50 qts of beans, mostly green, and about 40 qts of broccoli in our new upright freezer. Plus we have about a dozen quarts of raspberries. Oh we have a few qts of peas too. Our old freezer was a small, old(35 years), chest freezer. Now we have a new energy efficient 17 cu ft frost free freezer.

What to wear on my first day of school....

I remember back a few decades ago when it was the first day of school. We would always get our clothes out the night before. Well we did it for a few years but of course MCW and beermaker stopped that long before Lynn and I did. But I just happened to think about that as tonight is back to school eve for me. I am very nervous about this. I want to do really well. I want to get great grades. I don't question my ability to do this as I proved to myself durint the Summer Bridge that I am able to do the work. I think I am nervous because it is a new beginning. Entering into unknown areas. I don't think my being nervous is a bad thing. I think it is a very common thing. I will try to keep you up to date on my progress.

I was going to take a picture of the boys in my closet deciding for me what to wear tomorrow but I just don't have the energy right now to do it. So just imagine that photo is included in this post.

Summer Bridge

It went by even faster than I thought it would. My summer bridge program ended today. All we had today was a ten minute meeting with the physics and math professors. I had a good chat with them. For the second week in a row I got 100% on my end of the week math tests. My physics test from two weeks ago was 70%. Third highest in our small class. I am happy to report that on my test this week I received a 78%. Highest grade in the class. Nice way to close out the program. I am really happy I took this bridge program. It will be nice to have some other classes such as Surveying and CAD in addition to Chemistry and Tech Math.

Good to be past the first hurdle.

How could the NCAA Ice Hockey selection process do this to me? After 3 successful years of going to the Frozen Four I was denied tickets this year. I got my notice in the mail today. So of course I called the beermaker immediately to tell him of my woes. All we could figure was that people who were higher on the list (that is more than 3 FFs to their credit) who had not gone in the past decided to go this year. I have no other explanation. Unless the beermaker and Ray got luckier than I, we will be buying our FF tickets this year from eBay.

Grades Update

I am happy to report that I got an 83 % on my Tech Math test from last week. Like I said the other day...Physics not so good. I only scored a 46%. But as my teacher was quick to point out I was the 5th highest grade in the class. Mind you there are only 10 of us in the class. But he said I would get a solid C on the test using the scale. So 4 people did better but 5 did worse. All in all I feel pretty good about my first week back hitting the books. Next update probably won't be until next week. Hope you all have a great week.

My Dog Is Cool...

This is our dog Leo. He is one cool dog. He likes to ride around wearing his "doggles." That way he can stick his head out the window as we zoom down the road not having to worry about the occasional bug or dirt particles that might get into his eyes.
When I was driving home from school the other day I heard a story on the radio about dogs and being in cars in the hot weather. They were just re-iterating how bad it is to leave your pup in your car. They gave a website that you can go to to see if it is too hot in your area that day to safely bring your favorite pup along for the ride. All you have to do is enter your zip code and they do the rest. You should check it out.

Same Boat

Hello Everyone. I feel like I have gotten into the same boat as the breadmaker.
I think I won't be posting many if any blogs for the next few weeks while I am
doing my Summer Bridge program at Vermont Tech. I have 2 hours of Tech
Math and Physics each day. This past week I came home each day and spent
about 4 hours on my homework. I also just got a job working in a hardware/feed
store in the Northfield. Northfield is just over the mountain from our house.
About a 15 minute ride to work. I will be working there on Saturday and Sunday.
School was very hard for me this first week. I haven't had to think like that in
30 years!! I had 4 quizzes and 2 tests this week. I did okay on the quizzes
but not sure about the tests as they were on Friday. My math test was pretty good.
The physics test not so good.

Heavy Rain Today....

We had some heavy rain come through today about noon time. We got almost 2"of rain in about 45 minutes. The pictures are just some shots of the veggie garden near the house to show how much rain there was. There was also some hail. It was a little bit larger than a pea. It did no damage to any of the veggie crops. The beans are laying on the ground right now but I think they will bounce back up.

Green River Reservoir

Although the Leo thought it would be a great idea for him to come along on our canoe trip we decided that it would be better for him to stay home. I couldn't imagine those two in a canoe on dry land never mind on water.

We had just bought a new rack to put on my car. For those who don't know I am no longer a truck owner. I have been driving this 2005 Subaru since last September. I really like the car but I do miss being up higher when I drive. Anyhow back to the story. We are the fortunate owners of a nice canoe. Leigh's Mom gave it to us last year. We went up to the Waterbury reservoir a couple of times but never any further than that. It is about a 20 minute ride from our house. So this year with the different car we needed a rack. I put the rack on the car Thursday night. Very simple to put on. Then on Friday morning we were all ready to go on an adventure.

We decided that we would go to Green River Reservoir a little bit north of us. As you can see my able copilot was all ready to go.

It took us about an hour to get there. we arrived about 9:00 a.m. There was only one other person who had signed the sheet that day. It was a beautiful day. We paddled around the reservoir for about three hours. We only saw a couple of other boats for most of the time we were out there. When we got back to the boat launch area around noon there were quite a few people and their assorted non-motorized boats. Most of them looked like they would be camping for the weekend. We were quite happy that we didn't have to see them while we were out paddling around.

We had a great time. We decided not to bring Leigh's camera with us just in case it got wet. It made us say we need to buy a case for it so we can bring it with us. That is why there are no photos from our trip included here today. As we were first setting out we heard some loons calling back and forth to each other. It reminded me so much of those early days at Bow Lake when I would be out rowing in my rowboat. Man we had fun when we were kids at Bow Lake. I'm sure my siblings would agree with me. We paddled past a couple of camp sites that were occupied but other than that we saw no one. The water was smooth. No breeze at all. Very easy paddling. As we paddled along there was absolutely no noise at all. Other than our paddles dipping into the water we heard nothing. Except perhaps the deer flies that would buzz us any time we got close to land. At one point during our paddle we had gone up the narrow part-about 40 feet and decreasing for about 2 miles until you reached a beaver's dam- and the deer flies were thick. I would guess I saw 15 buzzing around Leigh's head as we were slowly paddling up this part of the reservoir. It was the same around my head. The biggest difference being Leigh had remembered to bring her hat with her. Ever since I got my haircut I don't wear a hat as much as I used to. Like never. It was very Everglade like as we paddled toward the dam. We had read a guide book about the reservoir before we went so we knew the dam was coming. Small 3-4' diameter tufts of grasses sticking up from the earth surrounded by water. Marsh like. Moose habitat. But alas we saw no moose. But we did see a great blue heron as we approached the beaver dam.
It stayed in place until we about 15' away from it. Then it very slowly took off flying about 30 yards downstream. We saw the heron for most of our return trip out of the end of the reservoir. About 15 minutes. It was really cool the way he flew just ahead of us a couple of times to get away from us. Not very far. But just far enough. We also saw some canadian geese with their babies. About 8 little geese swimming along.

However the best thing we saw was the mother loon with one baby on her back and the other practically glued to her side. We were close to the loon designated area (I wasn't aware that loons could read signs. Apparently this one couldn't either as she was not in her designated area.) when we saw a loon about 30 yards straight in front of us. So we just kept on paddling. I kept waiting for the loon to dive. But it didn't. Then Leigh, with the aid of the binoculars, saw that it had babies with it. We then swung wide of them. She let out a couple of warning cries as we went past her. The small ones were very fuzzy and new looking. It would have been very good to have had the camera at that point.

When we were rounding the island that was about 300 yards from the launch area we hit a very brisk wind. The last few hundred yards were an effort. The breeze as they say, (whoever they are) came out of nowhere, to create some small white caps as we finished out our trip to on Green Mountain Reservoir. We will go back there again this summer for some more paddling. Leigh had packed us a nice lunch to have but we were back before it was time for lunch. But also happy to have missed all those other people who had been arriving.

I tuned in PTI tonight to see if perhaps Tony and Wilbon would mention Gary's birthday today. Well it was Wilbon on the road and Bob Ryan sitting in the studio in place of Tony. It was probably better it was Bob Ryan as he knows some New England sports. Here is the conversation as I heard it.
Wilbon: Say Bob we want to wish a happy 54th birthday to Gary Warner of Meeteetse Wyoming.
Bob: I remember him well Wilbon. It was the mid 1970s in Lewiston Maine. He was a punter for Bates College. They were a real powerhouse back then.
Wilbon: What? What? What are you talking about? Bates College a powerhouse? Powderpuffs maybe, but powerhouse?
Bob: You better believe it Wilbon. All the other top D1 teams were afraid to play them.
Wilbon: I suppose you are right. Anyway Happy Birthday Gary.

Johnny Has His Own Blog

Quite pleased to announce that over the weekend we were able to come to contract terms with Dr. Johnny. His demands regarding travel percs were a little bit outrageous but we finally were able to figure out who would actually accumulate the air miles. He is now doing (mostly photos of himself) a blog. Memories

I don't know if any of you do this, but Leigh and I try to do this fairly often. As a day comes to a close and we are lying in bed, close to sleep, Leigh and I try to tell each other a memory from sometime earlier in our lives. If you don't ever do this you should try it. You just say, "Hey I have a memory to share." And away you go. Learning something about your partner that you may not have known before.
Well today I was out stacking some wood. I was listening to Vt. Public Radio while "All Things Considered" was on. I can recall, in Virginia, Zack and Jack singing the theme song to that show with just a slight twist on the words. They would sing "all things considered, all things considered, all things considered and some things not". I am not really sure if there are words associated with that theme song. If there were really no words to their theme it is too bad they didn't happen to call us in Hightown and we could have given them those lyrics. I found none at the NPR website. Does the beermaker or anonymous remember that they used to sing that song? Another memory that I had at about the same time was that, (that is while I was stacking wood) about the same time,(that being Zack's age) was of Zack going absolutely WILD when the "Barney Miller" theme song would come on the TV. I am talking WILD. And they say white boys can't dance??? Well they never saw Zack when that song was played. He was possessed by that song. Not the words but the instrumental part. I am fairly sure that the previously mentioned beermaker and anonymous will remember Zack and that particular memory of mine. I would bet that if Jenny were to play that song she might see a side of Zack she didn't know existed!!!

I also happened to think about the beermaker just rocking in the rocking chair at breakneck speed with then baby Cody when he use to cry. It always amazed me at how fast he could get that chair going. Perhaps we should have put him on the grid to power our house.

One More (or more) Reason To Love Hockey...

I really love hockey. You all know that. I just love hockey. I love to play. I love to watch. Truly a lifelong passion for me. Today I watched the Sabres beat the Rangers. I do enjoy seeing the Rangers lose. Almost as much I enjoy seeing the Red Wings lose. But there were two things that I really liked as the game ended. Well of course actually three. First the Rangers lost!!!!!
The next thing is the handshake after a series ends. I just think that is one of the greatest shows of sportsmanship there is in any sport. I have been on both ends of that handshake. I have been the winner and also the loser. Much more fun to be the winner. The other thing I liked was the Rangers' salute to their fans when the game was over. It is a very European way to end a hockey game.

Oh what a great afternoon I had. First my weekly staff meeting was cancelled. One might think that would be enough to create a banner day. But no it got even better when I fired up the Troy-Bilt, on the second pull no less after a Winter of inactivity, and was able to till the smaller of my three veggie garden spaces. I just love the look and smell of a freshly turned over garden. Guess that is why I am Gardenboy!!!
One a sort of negative note. I couldn't get that lazy farm boy Johnny to come and get the stones out of the garden space after I had tilled. No fresh peas for him.
